In recent years, the cycling industry has witnessed a concerning trend: the proliferation of counterfeit bike chains being sold on online marketplaces like eBay and Amazon. These fake chains are packaged and falsely labeled as reputable brands like KMC and Shimano. While the allure of a cheaper alternative may be tempting, the risks associated with purchasing counterfeit bike chains far outweigh any potential savings. In this blog post, we'll explore the importance of avoiding counterfeit bike chains and why prioritizing safety should always be paramount when it comes to cycling equipment. kmc shimano chain
1. Quality and Durability kmc shimano chain
Authentic bike chains, from trusted brands like KMC and Shimano, are engineered to meet stringent quality and durability standards. They undergo rigorous testing to ensure that they can withstand the rigors of cycling, including high speeds, varying terrain, and extreme weather conditions. Counterfeit chains, falsely branded as reputable names, are often made from inferior materials and manufactured using substandard processes. As a result, they are more prone to breakage, stretching, and premature wear, posing a significant safety hazard to cyclists.
2. Reliability and Performance
The performance of a bike chain is crucial for the overall functioning of the bicycle. Authentic chains are designed to provide smooth and efficient power transmission, ensuring a seamless riding experience. Counterfeit chains, falsely labeled as genuine products, may exhibit inconsistencies in design and construction, leading to erratic performance, gear skipping, and chain slippage. This not only compromises the rider's ability to control the bike but also increases the risk of accidents and injuries.
3. Safety Concerns
Perhaps the most pressing reason to avoid fake bike chains is the safety risk they pose to cyclists. A compromised chain can suddenly snap or malfunction while riding, resulting in a catastrophic accident. Whether it's a leisurely ride in the park or a competitive race, the consequences of a faulty bike chain can be severe, including falls, collisions, and serious injuries. By investing in authentic bike chains from reputable manufacturers or authorized dealers, cyclists can mitigate the risk of such incidents and prioritize their safety on the road.
4. Warranty and Support
Authentic bike chains typically come with manufacturer warranties and customer support services, providing cyclists with peace of mind and recourse in case of any issues or defects. Conversely, counterfeit chains offer no such assurances, leaving consumers with little recourse if the product fails to meet expectations or malfunctions. Choosing genuine bike chains ensures that cyclists receive the necessary support and assistance from the manufacturer, including repairs, replacements, and technical advice.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the importance of not buying fake bike chains falsely labeled as KMC and Shimano off eBay and Amazon cannot be overstated. While the allure of a bargain may be tempting, the risks associated with counterfeit chains far outweigh any potential savings. Investing in authentic bike chains not only guarantees quality, reliability, and performance but also prioritizes the safety and well-being of cyclists. By making informed choices and supporting reputable manufacturers, cyclists can enjoy a safer and more enjoyable riding experience for years to come. Remember, when it comes to bike chains, safety should always come first.
Pictures of fake vs local bike shop
Faded colour. The KMC site needs updating. The logos match. Click https://www.kmcchain.eu/service/fake-chains
Fake was in the packet wrong way around.
Printing quality not as good and poly bag is very messy on fake.
Fake on left. Metal looks different, missing tab on kmc writing end and also fake one looks bent at rivet. Also Rivet is larger on fake.
Hard to tell looking. Fake on Left. But you can see the KMC has a better logo punch and the Bevels on edge are more pronounced. Also the Lube on KMC is thicker than the fake.
5.98mm ish on fake. Means shifting is messy and catches cassette.
5.83mm ish on original. The fake is almost a mm out. Hence bad shifting.
I hope this blog post helps.
